6. Various supermarkets: Horse meat scandal (2013)
What happened? The secret ingredient that made Tesco’s, Dunnes Stores’, Aldi’s, Lidl’s and Iceland’s burgers so delicious turned out to be horse meat. This upset people as in general people care more about the wellbeing of horses than cows.
What did the supermarkets do about it? They stopped selling the burgers but experienced large drops in sales. Tesco in particular dropped €360 million in market value by Wednesday 16 January 2013.
Who came out on top in the end? Probably the beef industry, who no longer had to compete to the same extent with the horse meat industry when supplying to supermarkets.
